I took my daughter to see David Hammer, SLP in Pittsburg, at their children's hospital. His specialty is apraxia. He is excellent! Another great SLP is Nancy Kauffman, who has a private center.

Keep searching for answers! by: Kate
My heart really goes out to you because your grandson sounds so similar to my daughter. When she was 3, she said about 30 partial words.
I have to disagree with your SLP, saying that because he says partial words he can't have apraxia - that is one of the classic signs of apraxia - dropping the beginning and ending of words. Does she have experience working with apraxic children?
When my daughter was diagnoised with apraxia we took her to the children's hospital that is about an hour away from us. If I were you, I would take him to a children's hospital or a place specializing in speech therapy to get an accurate diagnois and pay for that privately (insurance may cover the cost) Before taking him to a different SLP I would ask to speak to the therapist and ask questions such as "Do you have experience with apraxia?", if not, call someone else - (for more questions to ask see my article www.apraxiaspeaks.com/speech-therapy.html ) So basically , I would get out the phone book and call speech therapists until I found someone with experience with apraxia.
Your school's approach of "keep talking to him..." will not work for a child with apraxia, they need intensive speech therapy - the ideas I mention on the website of supplements and sound therapy can speed this along.
I wish you the best of luck in finding help for your grandson.

Where to find help by: Anonymous
Hi,
My son was attending speech therapy at Sounds Smart in Placentia and his SLP told me my son had Apraxia Childhood Disorder. It was hard to believe at first but I am currently trying to get as much help as possible. He will be attending group therapy at Yorba Linda District but I don't think that is the best for him.
