Apraxia questions from Worried Mother

My son is 3 years old. He was a planned c section and had no trama at birth or since birth. He hit beginning milestones on time. But, at 1 he was not walking or pulling up. He had one foot that turned out and rolled in and he seemed to be weaker on the right side, so we went to an orthopedic doctor. He did an MRI of his spine but it was fine. We have done genetic testing that has been fine. We went to a neurologist and did Cat scans of his brain and they were also fine. He began therapy at 17 months for hypotonia. He also has sensitivity issues to sound and touch. We got orthodics to help the foot issue. We have gone to a developmental pediatrician. Now at 3 and saying no words I believe he may have apraxia. I know sometimes hypotonia goes along with apraxia. I also have read sensitivity also can go along with apraxia. He is walking holding onto one finger, but his confidence holds him back from walking independantly. The only diagnosis I have is "He has characteristics of verbal apraxia, characteristics of cerebral palsy due to weakness on one side and characteristics of sensory disorder." The D. Ped said he could not diagnose him. I'm reading the book The Late Talker and it sounds soo right.I guess since he has all three issues and not just speech, I was wondering if anyone has had the three issues together. I don't know if this makes his more severe apraxia. Any advice, suggestions or success stories would be greatly appreciated!! Does everyone's apraxia show up on the Cat scan/MRI of head or not? If this is a neuro issue why does it not show up?? This has been a hard 2 years!!

Sounds like you have your hands full!!!! 1 hour speech 3 x a week is fabulous!! My son will only get 1 hour a week. But we will do private therapy for 1 hour a week as well. I am soooo ready for his first word!! He is 3 years 3 months and says no words. It breaks my heart. But we feel he understands all that we say so that is a plus!I need to do more speech therapy at home. Where we live there is not a speech school. If his speech does not come by next year I'm not sure what I will do!! We have lots of toys that could help with speech but he doesn't seem ready yet. He still can't drink through a straw which I know would be helpful. Let me know the activities you feel have worked the best for you at home. Thank you very much!!

Hey! It sounds like your Will and my son do have some of the same issues. When did he walk and talk? Going to Kindergarten does he need special help or it he just getting some speech therapy at this point? My son will start a Preschool Mother's Morning out this year two mornings from 9-12 at our church. I hope the interaction with the kids will be beneficial for him. I put him with a group 2 years younger than him which is hard. I'm glad he is little so he is not towering above them! The preschool with doubling up his therapy this year I am praying for a big growth year for him. Have you done any supplements, fish oil etc? :)

Hi... I agree with the two comments above - when it comes to moving forward just learn everything you can to help your little one and find great speech/OT therapists...easier said than done but there are many resources these days for info. I have many apraxia momma friends on facebook who are all there to help. If you are intersted post a response and I'll connect up with you.... Good Luck!

Hi,

It's scary when the experts have so few answers for you, isn't it? I think that is probably the worst part of this disorder, there is always that quiet little voice in the back of your mind whispering "what if they're wrong and this is really a symptom of something worse and YOU are IGNORING it." My Will also has verbal apraxia with gross motor incoordination and auditory and visual sensory processing disorder. He just finished 2 years of a developmental delay preschool program and is going into mainstream Kindy at 5. Keep up the therapies and stay strong. It does get easier.

so sorry to hear of your woes.........i have a 10 year old who was born premature and now has sensory issues........that, in my opnion is one of the hardest things to deal with......the melt-downs......he has serious food issues (due to sensory).....but with a lot of OT and some speech he is doing great! main stream school.........good grades.......good speech......just has lingering sensory issueas.....which i think we all have to one degree or another......i also hanve a 4 yr old son who has been diagnosed verbal aparxia.....no speech before one......less then 15 words by age 2.........he has had intensive speech therapy (three times a week for an hour in our home)........and i worked with him a ton........he know is on his 2nd year of pre-school and has been mainstreamed to a blended classroom and is doing great! there ar tons of tools out there.......signgin cd's that help.......picture cue books etc.........but the best is to get yourself a great speech therapist that you can work with.......one who understands you and your child and that you feel comfortabe with......good luck and lt us know if you ever need anyting....even if it is to just scream at someone who understands!
