Apraxia and Preschool

by Melissa
(Washington)

My son is 3 1/2 and was diagnosed with apraxia when he was 2. He's currently receiving speech therapy and is making some progress. His SLP thinks he should do okay in preschool next fall if we choose to enroll him. Just recently we have noticed that my son lacks some fine motor skills (can't hold a pencil, scissors) and are currently waiting to get him evaluated by an OT. With him having apraxia and now possibly some fine motor delays I'm having concerns about enrolling him in preschool. I was just wondering if anyone else has had good or bad experiences with preschool? Would you recommend I continue to look into preschool for the fall? I'm just on the fence and am looking for advice. Thanks!

Preschool has helped my littel boy
by: Anonymous

Hello Melissa - my son started preschool at age 3 and was virtually non verbal when he started last january. It's been a little over a year and his progress is nothing short of amazing. He is enrolled in an ESE class here in Orlando and being around kids has really helped him with his speach. He, when prompted, speaks in full sentences now and has had an exponential grown in language. My opinion, enroll your son in Preschool but be patient. It doesn't happen overnight but we've been amazed with his progress in one year. I can't wait to see where he is a year from now. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and your little boy.

Yes it is possible

Hello,
My son had some issues also when he was 2 and once I placed him in preschool he made lots of progress. You will be amazed how much they learn from other kids. My son was going to speech through the district. In addition, he was going twice a week for private therapy and preschool. He is now five years old and he is doing so much better. He continues to attend therapy.
I hope this helped.
Best Wishes,
Maria
