I just went to www.generationrescue.org and it's amazing. I found a DAN doctor that works with apraxic kids who we will be seeing. Apraxia and autism affect the same part of the brain so it's not surprising that the doctors who treat autism know useful therapies for apraxia. This has been so helpful! THANK YOU!

Recovery From Apraxia by: Anonymous
YES! Recovery is possible. My son is almost four years old, and was diagnosed very early (verbal and oral apraxia). I am a teacher, and I've had apraxic children in my classroom in the past, so I was aware of the early signs of apraxia. We, of course, use speech therapy, but the most important issues that we've addressed have been the underlying medical issues that result in 'apraxia'. We use biomedical interventions, and they work!! See.....www.generationrescue.org.
My son is completely verbal, now, and he speaks in complete sentences. He has articulation errors, but his diagnosis is being downgraded to phonological disorder.
Not too shabby for a little guy that had no tongue movement, whatsoever, and real words until after 2.6 years old.....Once we started fish oils and biomed, it all came together for him.

Thank you by: Kate
Thank you Susan for your contribution. Waiting is the hardest for moms. If you ask your speech therapist "how long?", you most likely will get the standard answer "every child is different". When my daughter turned 4 she hardly spoke at all, but then went through a period of rapid progress and now at 7 is very understandable. Just take things day by day, keep searching for what will work for your child and keep your hope focused on the best possible outcome.

HOW LONG? by: JANA
My understanding is that they can "recover" from apraxia but no one ever says how long it will take. It's so frustrating. I just saw on Oprah that Jenny McCarthy has a new book and I know that she has tons of information on autism and stuff. It might be worth checking out-google it! I wish I knew how long it would take too. It makes it hard on us moms. I think it's easier to stop trying to figure out why this happened and how to fix it fast. Just hang in there and do what your instincts tell you to do.
